Cats and dogs: All at sea

Cats and dogs have been cherished on board ships for as long as people have made sea voyages. In a life from which children and families are usually missing, and are often very much missed, pets provide a focus for emotions and affection.

Taken by Sydney photographer Sam Hood between 1900 and 1950s, this selection of photographs shows how much pets meant to many seafarers.

A touring exhibition produced by the Australian National Maritime Museum.

The museum is open Wednesday to Friday, 10am – 4pm, and Saturday to Sunday, 10am – 3pm.
