Choosing the location of Brisbane’s early port
Presented by Wynnum Manly Historical Society.
Join us on Thursday, 17 June 2021 at 7pm at the Wynnum Heritage Ambulance Station, Cnr Tingal Road & Cedar Street, Wynnum (entry via Cedar Street) for our June general meeting featuring guest speaker Myrtle Beitz who will be telling us about choosing the location of Brisbane’s port.
In 1828, a small establishment was made at Dunwich for the purpose of receiving supplies for Brisbane; cargoes were placed in a storehouse. This enabled ships to unload quickly and return south. Thus transport to Brisbane could be made at leisure to be removed by small tenders to go up the Brisbane River to the penal settlement. To avoid the double handling of cargo by using small tenders, an unofficial port was made at Emu Point (later Cleveland). A bush road connected Cleveland to Brisbane. But would Cleveland or Brisbane be the most suitable to service the squatters from the Brisbane Valley and the Downs?
The Ambulance Heritage Station’s COVID Safe Plan must be adhered to.
Due to the size of the venue, numbers are limited so you will need to book early to avoid disappointment.
Entry to the venue is via the Cedar Street entrance. There is on-street parking available.
Cost of entry is a gold coin donation. Light supper at the conclusion of the meeting. Raffle and lucky door prize.
