The forgotten jobs of the Defence Force

Join Anzac Square Memorial Galleries for a free talk about some of the different jobs people have taken on in our Army, Navy and Air Force that are also important for Australia’s defence commitments throughout the world.

Not all members of the Defence Force are soldiers on the front line. At this free talk, we will look at some of the occupations and tasks over the last 110 years that are often forgotten but have been absolutely essential for our front-line troops to be supported to do their jobs. From the farriers and troop supply columns to the dental prosthetists, and university research assistants.

This talk series draws from State Library of Queensland’s digital collection of military stories, diaries, letters, photographs and artefacts.

After the talk, visitors can stay to explore the Memorial Galleries – embarking on an interactive journey from the First World War to today, before taking time to reflect on the remarkable stories of bravery and sacrifice in the tranquil parklands.
