A powerful new exhibition is now open at the Queensland State Archives (February to July 2025)
Weaving together military artefacts, found objects, textiles and archival materials, Winagaylay Ngiyani Ganunga shares the experience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander servicemen and women during wartime, and the continuing battles they faced when they returned home.
Melissa Stannard’s artworks – equally intimate, incisive and bold – question the ANZAC legend. Melding nineteenth-century domestic objects with World War militaria, Stannard invites us in to consider the courage and sacrifice of Indigenous servicemen and women, the discrimination to which they returned, and the resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families.
Winagaylay Ngiyani Ganunga is available to view at Queensland State Archives, 435 Compton Road Runcorn from now until 18 July 2025.
