A Retrospective Exhibition: Improviso Ad Libitum
The group was founded in 1974 under the direction of Mr Harlie Axford, a tertiary music lecturer at Kelvin Grove and Carseldine campuses who produced the first play Under the Sycamore Tree at the Mount Cotton Hall in Mount Cotton Village.
In the following 40 plus years, enthusiastic locals created, built and painted sets, directed actors, rehearsed lines and music, operated sound and lighting, made and produced props, and organised advertising.
The most striking aspect from the years of the Mt Cotton Drama Group was the friendship, assistance, and fun the members enjoyed. Everyone pulled together and new talent was discovered and encouraged. Many plays were written by a member or group of members.
As the years went by, the members grew older, and the hard work of building and dismantling sets became too arduous and younger people weren’t available, so the curtail fell on the Mt Cotton Drama Group in 2017. It was a sad day for members but the memories of the camaraderie that existed will never fade, rekindled in this retrospective exhibition.
