Seminar on 200th Anniversary of Settlement

Part three of the Brisbane History Group series examining the establishment of the Moreton Bay Penal Colony, oh yes, and our AGM

This is the third year in succession we have featured talks recognising the 200th anniversary of the establishment of the Moreton Bay Penal Settlement (and will coincidentally be our 43rd AGM). In 2023 Jennifer Harrison presented A River Somewhere outlining the individuals and events leading up to the establishment of the new penal colony, Paul Sayer Settling in at Moreton Bay 1824-25. In 2024 Chris Pearce’s The Moreton Bay Castaways in Brisbane 1823 examined their epic trek around the Bay, and Jennifer provided an introduction to John Oxley the man, and his part in selecting the location for the settlement.

This year Jennifer will provide a report on the progress of the settlement during 1825 including its relocation from Redcliffe to what in due course would become Brisbane, and Simon Cleary an account of Major Edmund Lockyer’s exploration of the Brisbane river system and its importance.

Registration and bookshop from 1.30pm, (short) AGM at 2pm followed by tea and biscuits then this afternoon’s presentations.

Jennifer Harrison’s recent publication Fettered Frontier is available from BHG, Simon Cleary’s Everything is Water, the story of his own six week trek along the length of the Brisbane River, from all good bookshops.
