Ghost nets as pollution & as weaving materials – Museum Gana Event
Presentation and discussions about cultural and ecological tensions that arise with the use of ‘found materials’ including washed-up fishing nets as weaving materials.
Presenters:
Sonja Carmichael & Leecee Carmichael
Quandamooka weavers whose work is the subject of CREATE EXCHANGE: Ngumpi exhibition; they use ‘found’ materials including from fishing nets and debris in their art.
Kathy Townsend
Associate Professor at University of Sunshine Coast who researches marine conservation and human impacts on the marine environment with a focus on global scale issues, such as the impacts of marine debris and marine pollution on marine turtles.
The theme of this GANA event is succinctly put by the National Maritime Museum:
“The message of the ghost nets are universal: of preserving life, loss, recovery of and reducing marine debris. The ghost nets represent an ongoing connection between humanity’s management of marine resources, ocean health and art.”
The Maritime Museum has been collaborating with Erub Arts and Ghost Net Art who use reclaimed fishing nets that have been abandoned or lost to create works of art and large-scale installations.
