Hurtling Towards Amalgamation…. Reflections from the Stephens Shire

Hurtling Towards Amalgamation…. Reflections from the Stephens Shire

A panel discussion about the creation of the Greater Brisbane City Council and the end of Stephens Shire in 1925.  The Annerley-Stephens History Group panel will consider questions about the amalgamation of Brisbane’s shires, towns and cities into the Greater Brisbane City Council in 1925 through the context of the Stephens Shire.

Panelists Mark Baker, Jeff Brunne, Pauline Peel and Dr Janis Hanley will examine the dawn of this new epoch in local government, what life was like in the Stephens Shire, a case study of Yeronga Memorial Park as the Stephens Shire disappeared, and ‘to BCC or not to BCC’ being a major question for shires like Stephens.

RSVP Friday 2nd May to annerleystephenshistorygroupin@gmail.com.

Free event, but donations welcome.

Entry via Villa St, parking available in surrounding streets.
