Shortly after retirement from politics, Sir Robert Menzies said that ‘politics proved to be my greatest duty. But the law remained my first love’. The Hon Justice Edelman will consider the extraordinary impact Menzies had on the law as author, barrister, Attorney-General for the State of Victoria, Attorney General of the Commonwealth and Prime Minister of Australia.
In examining the influence of Menzies, there is a sense of how much more he might even have contributed had he not departed the legal profession. An interesting contrast arises between Menzies as a lawyer and his tutor, mentor and friend, Sir Owen Dixon.
Join us for refreshments in the Portrait Gallery after the lecture.
