The Brisbane Quadrille

The theme for this year’s Heritage Festival is Unearthed – revealing the past, bringing to light lesser-known histories and stories, and unearthing knowledge to empower younger generations as custodians of culture and tradition.

We have a fascinating story to share for the Festival!

Buried in the University of Queensland Library is a rare book that captures the dances of Brisbane in the 1880s.

It offers a fascinating glimpse into the vibrant dance culture of the time. Within its pages, readers can discover detailed descriptions of dances popular throughout Britain and Australia, reflecting the social customs, artistic expressions, and community gatherings of the era.

Mr Richard Lovenberry was a prominent dancing master in Brisbane, teaching at the Ithaca School of Arts, Red Hill and Fortitude Valley. In 1884, he released a handbook designed to assist his students.  Included in the book is a dance created especially for the local community – the remarkable The Brisbane Quadrilles, something “his dancers fairly revelled in”.

Dancing is an exceptional way to experience history, bringing together the music and moves, and providing an insight into the social life of the era.  Above all, it’s an activity designed for maximum enjoyment!

All the dances will be taught on the night. (We expect some people will attend in costume). Live music by Phillip’s Dog.
